Q&A with Greg Parker

We sat down with CEO of Parker Companies, Greg Parker to gain insight on the industry, his formula for opening a new store, and his motivation for success. Read Mr. Parker’s responses below.

What makes Parker’s different from other convenience stores?
We try to make the entire shopping experience at Parker’s feel safe, fresh and friendly, from the moment you drive up in your car until you walk out of the store. We’re very aware of the importance of the speed of transactions and always have the cleanest bathrooms in town. We’re committed to quality in everything we do. We also spend more money per square foot than any other convenience store in the country. I believe in quality construction, beautiful landscaping and putting our money where our mouth is. Our stores have granite countertops, Italian porcelain tile, stainless steel finishes and a clean, open design. At Parker’s we’re focused on delivering the ultimate retail experience to our customers, every day.

How did you first get started in the convenience store business?
My father was a gas distributor in Glennville, Georgia for many years. I opened my first convenience store in Midway at the age of 21 and never looked back. Today, Parker’s has 27 stores in Georgia and South Carolina and many more in the planning stages.

What is the best part of your job?
I love the people I work with. We genuinely like each other and we like working together as a team. I also love exceeding the expectations of our customers every day.

How do you decide where to build new Parker’s stores?
We look at a variety of factors including traffic count, rooftops, demographics, lines of sight, access and egress, proximity of competitors and traffic generators like schools or major retail stores like WalMart or Target. We also look for red lights and things that tend to slow traffic down.

How has the industry changed over the years?
Technology has been a major game changer in the convenience store industry. From fountain delivery systems to social media, technology is integrated into everything we do.

What do you consider to be the secret of your success?
I embrace change and always look for ways to do better. I want Parker’s to be the best at what it does. I have surrounded myself with smart, entrepreneurial, hard-working people who share a common commitment to excellence.
