Ryan Brack
Congratulations to Ryan Brack!
Ryan started with Parker’s in 2014 and has been a rising star in our great organization ever since. He works at our Parker’s Market location in downtown Savannah serving as a customer service representative. Ryan was recently involved in a incident at our Parker’s Market location where he responded courageously to a car accident at that location. We sat down with Ryan to discuss himself, Savannah, and what exactly happened at Parker’s Market:
When did you start at Parker’s?
October 2014
What do you think is your greatest accomplishment or something you are most proud of here?
The thing I am most proud of is to be a part of the Parkers team. It has been flexible and patient with me. I love the job that’s the biggest accomplishment. It’s fast paced always something new to learn and very well ran from management to ownership.
Tell us about yourself, married, kids, education, where did you grow up etc.?
I’m 35 years old and I have a 14 year old son and am engaged. . I grew up in Lake City, SC and graduated from Carolina Academy. I was in the military for six years. I earned my associates degree in legal studies and I am currently pursuing my bachelors.
What are some of your hobbies?
Playing basketball and following the South Carolina Gamecocks athletics. I also enjoy playing and collecting playing cards.
What is your role at the company?
CSR/Bouncer at times on Friday and Saturday nights downtown at the Market.
What originally drew you to the company?
Honestly I was in need of a job and Parkers was the first one to call. However, as time passed I have been able to envision this as a career path.
What are three words to describe Parker’s?
Innovative, Competitive, Efficient
What is your favorite thing to do in or around the city of Savannah?
Exploring the local food and shops. I am not from here so my fiancé and I do a lot of exploring around the city.
What is your hidden talent?
If I told you it wouldn’t be hidden.
What phobias do you have?
My one and only phobia is claustrophobia. I don’t like small places or horribly crowded places. My biggest fear is being trapped in a small place.
Tell us in your own words what occurred at Parker’s Market with the car accident:
What went through your mind as everything was unfolding?
Advice to others that find themselves in a similar situation?
The incident was a very bad situation that could have been so much worse. I still don’t see how no one was seriously injured. A man was running from the GSP lost control of his car flipped it onto it’s topside and came flying towards our gas pumps. After the car stopped the man tried to get out and run but was quickly arrested. He was running from the police with his girlfriend and their six to eight month old child in the car. After the man and woman were out the car and in handcuffs I was walking by the car and noticed diapers and baby type items but haven’t seen a baby yet. I bent down and there was the child hanging upside down in a car seat. I then found a way in and ended up having to cut the baby out the seat. The sad part is neither parent even mentioned there was a child in the car. When I got the baby out of the seat I couldn’t get out the car with the baby, so I was pulled out by my feet by the police once I had the baby secure.
The first thing that went through my head was to cut off the pumps when I saw car coming towards the store. Making sure that everyone inside the store already was safe was my first thought. Cutting the pumps off just seemed like a good way to prevent an explosion. Then everything was so fast until I noticed the baby in the car all I could think was I got to get this baby out. There are so many things that I was thinking, “Is the baby ok? Is the car going to catch on fire,” then, “Great now I am stuck too.” The main thing that was going through my head was if one of my nieces, nephews, or my son was stuck or trapped I would hope and pray there will be someone there to help them or pull them out. That was kind of the fuel behind reacting the way I did. Plus it was a child who has done nothing wrong I don’t know how anyone couldn’t jump in and do what needed to be done.
The only advice I would have is try to stay calm and make an assessment of the situation and make the best and safest decision for the customers and people around. Then do what you feel you can to help and manage things the best you can. The main thing to me is staying calm and collective. If you do that you will make the right choices. The incident I was in was a very fortunate one. The fact no one was hurt still amazes me.
